In 1987, during his junior year at UCSD, Al was hired on as a part-time Wastewater Treatment Chemist at Pacific Treatment Corporation, then a Part-B facility located in the Barrio Logan area of San Diego. Upon earning his degree, he accepted a full-time position with the company.
As PTES transitioned from waste treatment into a full, turnkey service broker and transporter, Al honed his skills in hazardous waste management regulatory compliance as an Environmental Chemist. In 1991, the company seized on the opportunity of the then budding maquiladora waste market by establishing a TSDF in Tijuana, Baja California. Making use of his bilingual skills and accumulated knowledge in regulatory compliance, Al was instrumental in developing and implementing a permit framework that allowed the company to operate in compliance with both Mexico and US regulations. Al spent the next few years as Operations Manager developing SOP’s and IT Systems that would enable the company to grow in revenue and bottom-line performance.
In 1998 Al was promoted to General Manager of PTESSA and achieved sustained growth and stability through the years. In May of 2019, Al succeeded Yale Combs as the group of companies’ President.
Al lives in San Diego and enjoys spending time with his wife Viry and two children Alberto Jr. and Mia. Al also enjoys hiking in the outdoors, tennis, and off-road racing.
